Se, inicialmente, o novo corona-vírus teve impacto, essencialmente, na saúde pública, não tardou a fazer sentir os seus efeitos na economia. As medidas tomadas para conter a pandemia já originaram a falência de PMEs e o desemprego de milhares de pessoas.
Numa primeira fase, as empresas em posição de colaborar no combate ao vírus, estiveram presentes, fabricando e fornecendo diverso material de que os hospitais e outras instituições de saúde necessitavam urgentemente, entre outras acções de responsabilidade social. A solidariedade foi inspiradora e recebeu, naturalmente, uma admiração generalizada.
Por outro lado, no plano económico, existiram reacções de teor “só os mais fortes sobreviverão”, por parte de alguns lideres internacionais. No entanto, tal como em qualquer ecossistema, todos estamos ligados a todos. E todos os que “ficarem para trás” vão acabar por afectar aqueles que se encontrarem em posições mais favoráveis, quando a pandemia estiver controlada. Quantos mais “sobrevivermos”, mais ganhamos todos.
É inevitável que as empresas sofram perda de rendimentos, e nalguns casos é inevitável que sejam obrigadas a alterações indesejadas. Mas existem certamente casos em que as atitudes face à crise dependerão mais dos seus valores do que dos seus lucros.

Estudamos agora a melhor forma de minorar o impacto das circunstâncias nos nossos colaboradores, pois apesar de, inicialmente, o teletrabalho ter sido romanceado, o confinamento e este regime de trabalho revelaram-se mais complicados do que o previsto.
Muito se tem falado em curvas. O processo pelo qual estamos a passar pode também ser visto como uma curva. Uma curva sinuosa, cuja forma final é desconhecida.
Como em qualquer processo de aprendizagem, existem avanços e recuos. Apesar de haver momentos em que os recuos nos fazem duvidar da existência de progresso, a evolução, mesmo que não seja ao ritmo ambicionado, está continuamente a acontecer. Porque com os erros também se aprende.

Curves and Reverse Curves
Initially, the new corona-virus had an impact, essentially, on public health. However, soon after the first cases were announced, the economy started suffering its effects. The measures taken to contain the pandemic have already caused the bankruptcy of several SMEs and led to the unemployment of thousands of people.
Those companies that were able to collaborate in the fight against the virus, came to the battlefield or helped behind the scene. For example, they manufactured and supplied diverse material that hospitals and other health institutions urgently needed, among other social responsibility actions. This solidarity was inspiring and received widespread acclaim.
On the other hand, at the economic level, the attitude and message of some international leaders can best be described by the expression “only the strongest will survive”. However, an human society, like every ecosystem, is an interconnected structure, where everybody is somehow connected to everyone else. And everyone who “falls behind” will end up affecting those who find themselves in more favourable positions, after the pandemic is under control. United we stand, divided we fall.
It is inevitable that many companies will suffer loss of income. In some cases, they will be even forced to go through unexpected changes due to those losses. There are also certainly cases where the way this crisis is handled is guided by the company’s set of values, and not so much by its profits.

If we don't "survive" as a whole, we will all lose. Because a company is not just a group of anonymous people. A company is made of people and the relationships they establish with each other. It is made of the team spirit built over the years. It is made of the trust that their employees, partners and customers place in it.
Before confinement and remote work were imposed by government authorities, we adopted those measures in order to protect our employees and their families, our work partners and the community in general. We are now studying the best way to lessen the impact of circumstances on our employees. Although remote work was initially met with enthusiasm, confinement and working from home proved to be more complicated than expected.
These days, there has been much talk about curves. They have been used to represent several on-going processes related to the pandemic. The process we are going through, as a company adopting new working methods, can be seen as a curve, as well. A sinuous curve, whose final shape is unknown.
As with any learning process, there are advances and setbacks. There are times when setbacks make us doubt the existence of progress. However, evolution, even if not at the desired pace, is constantly happening, because we also learn from our mistakes.
As you can see in the associated images, curves are something we are used to deal with! Whether helical, spiral, spherical or more complex in nature, we have been there and we are ready to handle them in the future.
